Advent at Southlands

Hello Southlands community! Sorry you haven’t heard from us in awhile; it’s been an exciting, busy time at school and we are truly excited for where we’re headed as a Family!

We wanted to share some thoughts that we’ve had about the upcoming season. As many of you may know, today marks not only the beginning of December, but also marks the second day in the season of Advent.

Taken from the Latin word “adventus,” the word advent means “the arrival of someone or something.” In a Christian context, Advent is a time of preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth and the beginning of the salvation story, which we commemorate on Christmas Day. In technical terms, it is the first season of the Christian church year, leading up to Christmas and including the four preceding Sundays. This year, Advent started yesterday (November 30th), and runs until Christmas eve. To help you to reflect on Christ and this season, we came up with a few ideas that you can use during this season.

1. Find an Advent reading plan

Most of us use smartphones, tablets, and laptops these days, so now would be a good time to check out the YouVersion Bible app. This is a great resource that you can take anywhere, and gives you a chance to literally carry God’s Word with you. In it, you can not only read the entire Bible, but you can browse reading plans to help guide your time of study. There are many Advent readers to choose from, and we particularly enjoy John Piper’s “Good News of Great Joy” Advent reading plan.

2. Find at least one person to encourage each day leading up to Christmas

One of the happiest times of the year is the lead-up to Christmas. How can one not feel joy while seeing the lights and taking in all the joyful holiday music?

However, Christmas, and the holidays as a whole, could also be the most discouraging or loneliest of times for some.

Wherever you may be this season, why not make it a point to encourage those around you? It can be as easy as complimenting your friend for a job well done on their paper, or thanking your parents/guardians for the delicious meal they prepared for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.”
