The athletics department hosted Letterman’s Night last Friday night. It was a great opportunity to honor our athletes and coaches and celebrate a wonderful year! Guest Speaker “Shep” Shephard spoke to students, staff, and parents about the importance of making good choices. There were very few dry eyes in the crowd as he spoke about the impoverished conditions he had to grow up in, and attested his success today to one choice he made to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior.
The mission of the Southlands Christian athletic department is to train men and women of integrity. Our vision is to train up successful athletes, and to win CIF championships with the utmost character. The vehicle in which the department uses to accomplish its mission and vision is the five C’s.
Commitment – being committed to each other and team … where there is unity God commanded blessing
Consistency – goal focused not reacting to praise or criticism but staying constant regardless of the situation “… but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.”
Courage– choosing what is right in the face of opposition, namely fear… “He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”
Communication – Positive action & Word towards others …“ Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
Compassion which is another word for love – Behavior driven by love for one another .. “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”
These 5 C’s are all important but the 5th C, Compassion or Love is the most important! We want our kids to understand that love is a choice not necessarily a feeling. Love is a choice to be patient when another student athlete is not the most talented but is giving his or her best effort… love is a choice to forgive and not keep a record of wrong when a friend has betrayed your trust, love is the choice to never give up, love Is a choice to cheer on your teammate who is playing in the position you want to play. We hope our athletes choose to love the way Christ did.. he loved us to death and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sins that we might choose him.
Our theme scripture for the athletic program is Philippians chapter 2 verse three do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit rather in humility value others above yourselves. We hope that every student athlete who comes through this program would BUYIN to this vision with a heart to put others before themselves as Christ did.
Life is a process and the hope is that our student athletes recognize that we all fall short but we should fight to be perfect as Christ was and is… never believing we have arrived but always having a desire to get better.
